Black-led reparations project moving BIPOC MaGes from Crisis to Sustainability
Reparations Roundtable (RR) is an LLC composed of white/white adjacent volunteers committed to securing reparations for Black women, femmes and children, through financial payment and labor, under the leadership of Black organizers.
RR began in 2017 as a Black-led reparations effort dedicated to moving Black and/or Indigenous People of Color of marginalized genders (BIPOC MaGes) from crisis to sustainability. Since then, we have redistributed more than $500,000 of white wealth to BIPOC MaGes. At any given time we are assisting more than a dozen people.
Though our membership is largely white/adjacent folks, we recognize we are tasked with DOING the work, not LEADING it. We affirm that we are accountable to every Black MaGe we assist and to Black leadership. We are also accountable to each other and recognize that a critical piece of engaging in reparations work as white folks is the need to continually unpack the violent white supremacy within us and our society.
When a Black MaGe comes to Black leadership in crisis, the organizer gathers initial information about the person and their needs. Sometimes the need is short-term and we can fund it immediately or connect the person with someone on the ground in our network who can assist. If neither is available, we fundraise on an emergency basis. If the need is longer-term, we organize a team of folks (ideally including people who can assist on the ground) to work with the Black MaGe under the guidance of a Black organizer.
We are 100 percent volunteer-run, and we do NOT hold funding. All funds we raise are distributed on a monthly and/or (if available) emergency basis directly to MaGes for their needs. Black organizers determine who receives funding, though we recognize that ultimately ALL Black people are owed reparations for to the ongoing violence of white supremacy.
As we continue to grow, some of the goals our Black organizers have identified include the purchase of real estate in key cities in the U.S. to be given to Black MaGes and their families, assisting with paying off student loans and tuition, ownership of temporary safe housing for domestic-violence survivors, and more. Each dollar received goes directly to the reparational projects Black organizers task us with. Join us in this life-affirming work!
Funding: If you are a white/adjacent person who recognizes your responsibility to repair the ongoing harms of systemic racism and white supremacy, consistent direct giving to Black MaGes and funding the work of Black liberation organizers is a fantastic start. You can do this by joining our Patreon (patreon.com/reparationsroundtable), where you will receive email updates on current projects, or through Mighty Networks by clicking the GIVE button at the top of this page. As you can see, we have a lot of ambitious goals for the future, and we will need all the funding we can get to make them reality.
Labor: We couldn't do any of this without the labor and dedication of our members. If you have time and skills to offer, please email us. Simple awareness of the resources around you and some familiarity with navigating them can go a long way. Do you have skills in persuasion? You can help recruit new funders! A good writer? Your skills are crucial for communications and securing grants. Empathetic listening skills and a key eye for detail? You'd be great in intake and direct support with assistees. Work well under pressure? We could use your skills in emergency fundraising and organizing. No skill is too small to be useful!
